Reading Logs
Continue completing each night on your January reading logs. First graders are required to read a minimum of 10 -15 minutes a night. These can be returned starting on Wednesday, January 29.
When your child is reading to you, have them use their index finger "pointing finger" to slide along under the text. Your child should be rereading stories several times. First time is for word knowledge, the second and additional readings develop fluency and comprehension. Talk with your children about the books they are reading to you. Ask them questions about the stories. Tell me what you thought was funny, or scary, or sad. Why do you think that happened? Or why did they do that? What was the problem they had? How did the problem get solved? In Common Core, children will be expected to start asking their own questions like these about the literature they've read and be able to answer them based on the text.
GUIDED READING- Guided Reading lessons are conducted in small groups at your child's reading level. The books used for these lessons are NOT sent home. I use them in class to teach the children various reading strategies. Reading practice at home can be done from many sources such as the reading folder book, reader, library books, or from the numerous websites and apps that are now available. We will use the reader as a resource to practice the high frequency words used in story context.
www.Lexile.com is a website that provides books at your child's reading level or grade level. You can also select books by your child's interest. Dist. 142 strongly suggests parents use this site to help choose books to read with your child.
CORE READING-This week we will be reading Story 5 "Get the Egg".
You will receive a list of the Spelling words on Fridays with the newsletter. You can also find them listed on the weebly. Grammar and Comprehension will be graded on the report card 2nd quarter.
In addition to this, we will be using several books in class to develop our comprehension skills aligned to the Common Core.
MATH-We are continuing to work on number bonds, word problems, and fact families.
